In February 2026, the Tamar Regional Council achieved a milestone that had been years in the making: welcoming our very first delegation from our Sister City, Tulsa, Oklahoma. After establishing this unique partnership between an Oklahoma community and Israel’s Dead Sea region, ten wonderful guests made the journey across continents to experience our desert home firsthand – and what an experience it turned out to be!

    Planning a Desert Welcome

Hosting the first-ever delegation from our Sister City required months of careful coordination. Every detail mattered: from arranging accommodations that would showcase our communities to creating an itinerary that would capture the essence of life in the Tamar region. The challenge was ambitious – how do you distill the magic of the Dead Sea region into just four days while ensuring meaningful cultural exchange and relationship building?

The answer lay in immersion: rather than simply showing our guests the sights, we invited them to live our experiences.

Running Together at the Lowest Point on Earth

The centerpiece of the visit was the Dead Sea Marathon in memory of Tomer and Giora RIP – and remarkably, all ten delegation members participated in various race categories. There’s something profoundly moving about watching visitors lace up their running shoes and join hundreds of others racing along the shores of the Dead Sea, 400 meters below sea level.

Several Tulsa participants even achieved personal records on our desert course! As they crossed finish lines with the stark beauty of the Judean Desert as their backdrop, they weren’t just completing a race – they were connecting to our landscape in the most visceral way possible, through their own effort and determination.

Shabbat in the Desert: Where Art Meets Tradition

Perhaps the most meaningful cultural exchange occurred during the Shabbat experiences in Neot HaKikar and Ein Tamar, with a particularly magical evening at JoJo’s Studio that perfectly embodied the creative spirit of our region. This remarkable evening combined multiple experiences: a delicious and moving Friday meal that embraced the warmth of Shabbat tradition, followed by a creative metal butterfly workshop where our guests worked with local materials under JoJo’s artistic guidance.

As the sun set over the salt formations and the first stars appeared in the desert sky, barriers dissolved and genuine friendships formed over shared stories, wonderful food, and collaborative creativity. This wasn’t just cultural tourism; it was an authentic glimpse into how Jewish life flourishes in this ancient landscape, where tradition meets innovation every week, and where artistic expression becomes part of the rhythm of desert life.

Sacred Connections: From Ancient Masada to Modern Memorial

The itinerary included profound moments of historical reflection. Tours of Jerusalem and Masada connected our guests to the deep roots of Jewish history in this region, while the deeply moving visit to the Nova memorial at Re’im provided a contemporary perspective on the resilience that characterizes both our communities.

These experiences strengthened bonds of understanding and solidarity that transcend geography – reminding everyone that shared values create connections stronger than any distance.

    Ein Gedi’s Natural Welcome

At Kibbutz Ein Gedi, delegation members experienced the full spectrum of what makes our region special. The botanical garden tour showcased the remarkable biodiversity possible in this desert oasis, while their overnight stay allowed them to experience authentic kibbutz life.

The Arts and Music Festival featuring Bikurim program students was a highlight, with musical performances and art exhibitions demonstrating the incredible creative talent flourishing in our communities. Watching young artists share their work with international visitors created a bridge between generations and cultures.

    Building Bridges, Creating Legacy

This first delegation visit accomplished something remarkable: it transformed an abstract Sister City partnership into genuine human connections. The logistics challenges – coordinating transportation across desert roads, managing diverse dietary needs, balancing historical touring with contemporary experiences – all proved worthwhile when measured against the authentic friendships that emerged.

The visit demonstrated that meaningful international partnerships aren’t just about official agreements; they’re built one conversation, one shared meal, one marathon finish line at a time.

    Looking Forward

As our Tulsa friends departed, carrying with them memories of desert sunrises, newfound friendships, and perhaps a bit of Dead Sea salt still in their running shoes, they left something equally valuable behind: the foundation for an enduring relationship.

This historic first visit proved that the Sister City partnership between Tulsa and Tamar is more than geographical curiosity – it’s a living connection between communities that, despite being separated by thousands of miles and vastly different landscapes, share fundamental values of innovation, resilience, and community spirit.

To our wonderful Tulsa delegation: thank you for your spirit, your warmth, and your commitment to this special relationship. You’ve left footprints not just along the Dead Sea shore, but in our hearts. The marathon medals will fade, but the memories and friendships formed in those four remarkable days will last a lifetime.

We’re already planning the next chapter of this extraordinary partnership!
