What an incredible day at the lowest point on Earth! February 6th, 2026 will be remembered as the day the Dead Sea Marathon truly returned to the international spotlight, bringing together approximately 8,000 runners from across Israel and around the world for an unforgettable experience in our stunning region.

    A Marathon with History

The Dead Sea Marathon, held in memory of Tomer and Giora Ron RIP, has been a beloved annual tradition in the Tamar region for decades, drawing athletes year after year to experience the unique challenge of racing 430 meters below sea level. Through all the challenges our region and country have faced, the marathon has persevered – a testament to both the resilience of our communities and the irresistible draw of this extraordinary landscape.

But 2026 marked something special: after more than two years of reduced international visibility following the events of October 7th, this year’s marathon attracted exceptional global attention, with 50 international journalists covering the event and showcasing the unique beauty of the Dead Sea to audiences worldwide.

Global Eyes on the Dead Sea

The presence of these international journalists was more than just media coverage – it was recognition that the Dead Sea region remains one of the world’s most remarkable destinations for athletic achievement. As cameras captured runners racing along the salt-crusted shores with the dramatic backdrop of the Judean Desert, the world was reminded of the breathtaking beauty that makes this marathon unlike any other on Earth.

The images and stories that emerged from that day travelled far beyond our region, carrying with them the message that the Tamar communities continue to thrive, welcome visitors, and host world-class events despite the challenges of recent years.

    Local Heroes and Community Spirit

Among the thousands of participants, local achievements shone particularly bright. We celebrated with tremendous pride as Arnon Shakedi from Neot HaKikar claimed first place in the 10K (B) race – a wonderful example of homegrown athletic excellence representing our communities on the international stage.

Perhaps the most moving moment came from the running group from Ein Gedi High School, who ran in memory of Yaniv Oren RIP, director of the Ein Gedi Educational Village, who fell in battle in the central Gaza Strip. Their participation transformed the marathon from a simple athletic event into something deeper – a tribute to courage, memory, and the enduring spirit of our communities.

    Sister City Success Stories

Among the 8,000 participants, we were especially proud to welcome our friends from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who travelled as part of our Sister City partnership. Watching the Tulsa delegation complete their chosen race categories with determination and pride was a perfect embodiment of the bonds we’re building between our communities – friendships forged not just through official agreements, but through shared sweat and accomplishment at the lowest point on Earth.

Their participation added an extra layer of meaning to the day, demonstrating how international partnerships can create genuine connections that transcend politics and geography.

    Showcasing Regional Excellence

The 2026 marathon also served as part of our 70th anniversary celebrations, providing a significant opportunity to showcase the Tamar Regional Council to tens of thousands of runners and accompanying visitors. The council pavilion became a hub of regional pride, welcoming absorption coordinators from our communities who promoted the unique opportunity of making a home in our remarkable region.

Local businesses seized the moment to share the best of what our region produces. Visitors had the chance to taste and purchase excellent dates from Meshek Tzabar and sample DUDA – excellent local beer from the Tamar Regional Council, courtesy of Eldad Pinto. These authentic tastes of local life gave marathon participants a genuine flavour of what makes our communities special.

Racing at the Edge of the World

Whether participants ran the full marathon, half marathon, 10K, or 5K, every runner experienced something truly extraordinary. Racing along the shores of the Dead Sea, surrounded by otherworldly salt formations and dramatic desert cliffs, they were participating in one of the planet’s most unique athletic challenges.

The marathon course offers something no other race can: the geological and historical significance of running at the lowest accessible point on Earth, where ancient history meets modern athletic achievement, and where the stark beauty of the desert creates a backdrop that transforms a simple race into an unforgettable adventure.

    Regional Pride and Athletic Excellence

Hosting 8,000 runners and 50 international journalists is no small feat for our desert communities, and the seamless execution of the 2026 marathon showcased the Tamar Regional Council’s capacity to deliver world-class events. From logistics coordination to hospitality, our communities demonstrated the kind of organizational excellence that makes athletes want to return year after year.

The marathon serves as more than just an athletic event – it’s an annual celebration of what makes our region special: the combination of natural wonder, historical significance, community spirit, and the kind of warm welcome that turns first-time visitors into lifelong advocates for the Dead Sea region.

    Looking Forward

As the dust settled on February 7th and the last medals were distributed, one thing was clear: the Dead Sea Marathon had not just returned to international prominence – it had reaffirmed its position as one of the world’s most distinctive racing experiences.

The global attention generated by the 2026 event, combined with the genuine enthusiasm of participants from around the world and the proud achievements of our local athletes, ensures that the Dead Sea Marathon will continue to draw athletes seeking something beyond ordinary racing experiences.

For those who missed the 2026 event, the message is simple: start training now for 2027! The Dead Sea will be waiting, along with the incomparable experience of racing at the lowest point on Earth, surrounded by some of the most dramatic and historically significant landscape on the planet.

Well done to all the runners – local heroes and international visitors alike. See you at the starting line in 2027!
