The adorable children of Tamar School want to tell you something… This year the Tamar Regional Council is celebrating 70 years!
Their voices ring out across the desert with infectious enthusiasm, reminding us all of what seven decades of determination and dreams have built in this extraordinary landscape . But their celebration comes with a delightful twist – they’re actually the second-oldest community in the region!
Ein Gedi: The Pioneer’s Pioneer
Six months before the Tamar Regional Council was even established, Kibbutz Ein Gedi was already planting its roots in the desert soil. Founded in 1956, Ein Gedi can proudly claim the title of the region’s eldest community – and they’re not shy about celebrating that fact!
Under the starlit Dead Sea sky, Ein Gedi recently launched its own 70th anniversary celebrations with a ceremony that literally lit up the night. The dramatic unveiling of a glowing “70” atop their dining room roof marked not just seven decades of history, but the bold beginning of their eighth decade.
Their celebration theme beautifully captures the spirit of this oasis community: “One eye looking back, one eye looking forward.” It’s a philosophy that could define the entire Tamar region’s approach to this milestone year.

Looking Back: The Foundation Years
Looking back, we honor the pioneers who planted seeds of hope in this desert wilderness 70 years ago. Ein Gedi’s founding families and international volunteers transformed bare earth into a thriving community, proving that with vision, determination, and unity, miracles really do bloom in the desert.
From those first footsteps in 1956 to the establishment of the Tamar Regional Council months later, these early settlers weren’t just building communities – they were writing the first chapters of an extraordinary story of desert settlement that would inspire the world.
Seventy Years of Everything
As the schoolchildren so beautifully expressed:
70 years of community
70 years of agriculture
70 years of settlement
70 years of industry
70 years of love
70 years of vision
70 years of tourism
70 years of education
70 years of creativity and art
70 years of growth
And most importantly – 70 years of wonderful people, who together are building a home here.
Each of these achievements tells a story. The agriculture that learned to make the desert bloom through innovative irrigation and adaptation to extreme conditions. The tourism that introduced the world to the unique beauty of the Dead Sea region. The education that nurtured generations in this challenging but rewarding environment. The creativity and art that found inspiration in the stark beauty of salt formations and desert sunrises.
Looking Forward: Embracing Tomorrow
But this anniversary isn’t just about celebrating the past – it’s about embracing the future. Ein Gedi has launched a beautiful new tradition this year, presenting specially designed t-shirts to their Nakelets (young members) and newcomers joining the kibbutz family. It’s their way of saying “Welcome home” to the next generation who will carry the story forward.
This spirit of renewal and welcome defines the entire Tamar region as it enters its eighth decade. From Ein Gedi’s international volunteers to the Sister City partnerships with communities like Tulsa, Oklahoma, the region continues to attract people from around the world who are drawn to its unique combination of natural wonder, innovative spirit, and genuine community warmth.
Challenges That Forged Character
The past 70 years haven’t always been easy. Through devastating floods, scorching summers, the ongoing challenges of sinkhole development, periods of conflict, and countless other obstacles, these communities have built something extraordinary here between the mountains and the sea.
Each challenge has been met with the same pioneering spirit that brought the first settlers to this seemingly impossible landscape. Whether adapting to climate extremes, developing new agricultural techniques for desert conditions, or finding ways to make tourism thrive in one of Earth’s most remote locations, the Tamar Regional Council communities have consistently proven that innovation and determination can overcome any obstacle.
A Legacy of Innovation
Today, the Tamar region stands as a testament to what can be achieved when vision meets determination. From the cutting-edge agricultural techniques that make farming possible in desert conditions to the world-class tourism infrastructure that welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, these communities have become global examples of successful desert settlement.
The Dead Sea Marathon, the thriving kibbutz communities, the innovative industries that have developed around the unique resources of the region – all of these achievements trace their roots back to those first brave pioneers who looked at this challenging landscape and saw not obstacles, but opportunities.
Proud Past, Active Present, Bright Future
As the schoolchildren proclaimed: “Proud of the past, working in the present, and continuing forward to the future.”
This motto perfectly captures the spirit of the 70th anniversary celebrations. The communities of the Tamar Regional Council aren’t just marking time – they’re actively building the foundation for the next 70 years.
From Ein Gedi’s glowing “70” lighting up the desert night to the excited voices of Tamar School children announcing this milestone year, the message is clear: this region’s greatest achievements may still lie ahead.
The celebrations have only just begun – stay tuned for an incredible year ahead as the Tamar Regional Council and its communities honor seven decades of extraordinary achievement and look forward to the next chapter of their remarkable desert story.
